If you possess a calender you may have noticed that 2015 is almost over. Only 2 days before people get together once again to celebrate the beginning of the new year and pump a shitload of fireworks into our already damaged atmosphere. I'd like to use this occasion to make a quick recap of what happened the past year (in terms of my music).
I spent most of January being all overwhelmed because of almost winning an actual remix contest back in December. As NicoKay, I've made constant progress, and when eventually it all culminated in this event of actual recognition, I knew this would be my last project under that alias. Even though it's just the name and it does not have anything to do with the content I'm creating, the end of NicoKay was soon to come. I wanted to start over again, with a new alias (one that I'm actually happy with), a new logo and new musical themes, leaving behind all the (more or less) cringeworthy things I produced in the past.
So on the 1st of May I started FOURSQUARED. There isn't actually much of a deeper meaning to this name, my birthday just happens to be on the 4th of February (so 04.02.). What really counted to me was to have an alias that doesn't restrict me to anything, to no genre and not even to music only: A project. To kick off that project I released an impulsive electronic rock short story called Next Level, followed by Alone In The Woods, an uplifting and danceable House track that was inspired by the feeling of being in the woods on your own and having the opportunity to do whatever you want without anybody seeing, hearing or judging you.
During the previous months I discovered another, relatively new, passion of mine: Film. I started watching more and more movies, one of the very first ones having been Fight Club. Movies became a whole new source of inspiration to me, which led me to start my series INSPIRED BY. Songs inspired by my favorite movies. The first one in that series was 6:42 AM, an hommage to Cloverfield (probably my favorite Found-Footage-monster-movie of all time). I love that song for being so much different to my previous, heavily EDM-influenced music. I am going to continue this serious in 2016, the list of possible movies is long. I am thinking about The Babadook, Fight Club and Birdman, just to name a few.
After 6:42 AM, nothing much happened in terms of new music. It's been mainly school that kept me from producing. That doesn't mean I did nothing during that time. What I consider one of my most important steps in 2015: I started learning the piano. Relatively late, but better late than never.
Finally, about a week ago, I released my latest song, Infected. It's a fun little Electro track that I've been working on for some, but that doesn't quite receive the recognition I think it deserves.
Overall, all changes aside, it has been a quiet year. On one hand I made a lot of personal progress, on the other hand, I feel like no one really noticed. I am spending more time than ever taking care of my social media pages, trying to make my music get heard by people and submitting tracks to music networks. So far it's all been without success, but that doesn't stop me from trying, because also more than ever before, I believe in myself and my music. I know that what I do is good. Not at all perfect, but worth being noticed. Now 2015 over, 2016 is around the corner and I can already tell that it's definitely going to be better than ever.
THANK YOU A LOT to everyone who sticked around or supported me in any way. I honestly appreciate it. Happy New Year to you all... and stay tuned.
